Sleeping Positions

For the first 4-6 months of baby’s life, the research on SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) really shows that putting your baby to sleep on their back in a crib/bassinet with a tight fitted sheet and nothing else is far and away the safest sleeping position.

Once baby is able to roll over, we need to make sure their arms are not swaddled so if they roll over in the middle of the night, they are able to reposition their heads in a comfortable position that makes it easy to breathe. So sleep sacks are fine as long as their arms are free to roam. And, if they regularly flip to their tummies on their own (not their side, but all the way to their tummy) when they are 4-6 months old, you can leave them on their tummy. If they are strong enough to roll over the way they want regularly, they are strong enough to move their head to a position that makes it easy to breathe.
